Shiryou Sensen: War of the Dead

Platform: MSX2

Status: Complete

Current patch: ver 1.0

A collaborative project with streamer/artist/all-around-cool-person AnnK and members of the Dank Community. Impressive translation work by Pinkpuff, especially without having played the game before to provide context and the original text being entirely in kana so there's even LESS context. Editing and playtesting in emulator by AnnK and on hardware by Shentok and Riney.

War of the Dead was released on three platforms (MSX2, PC-88, and PC-Engine), each of which differ in nearly every aspect. The original MSX release features unique gameplay features such as the day/night cycle and more open-ended exploration, as well as some unique story and character differences.

Shiryou Sensen: War of the Dead - The Resurrection of Browning

Platform: PC-88

Status: In progress, pending playtest

Current patch: not available

I actually started working on the PC-88 version first, translating the item and enemy names as a proof of concept. I had dumped the script and had tested replacing the intro text before setting the project aside. When Ann was revisiting the game on stream and mentioned possibly working with someone on translating the MSX version, I offered to revisit my project and see about porting whatever translation they did to the PC-88 version, posting my script dump on her discord in case it could be of any help. Ann informed me that each version had significant differences in the story that would prevent a straight port, but at this point my curiosity had been piqued and I just had to take a look at the MSX version myself.

A year later, BabaJeanmel was finishing up his Alicesoft script porting project and inquired about future plans. He had a couple ideas and I through in a few that I had on the back burner that I had already dumped the scripts for, War of the Dead included. He started working on translating my scripts while I looked into the hacking on his games, and thus the productive partnership continues. I hit up AnnK and Shentok again for playtesting help, which proved to be the perfect opportunity for Ann to refine her already excellent walkthrough for this version of the game.
